Superintendent's Message

High%2520school036

Wilkins Elementary School issued the following announcement on Mar. 4.

Woodland Hills School District Interim Superintendent Dr. Daniel Castagna has provided an update to faculty, staff, students and families regarding the district’s masking policy and other COVID-19 mitigation measures:

Dear Woodland Hills School District faculty, staff, students and families,

On Thursday, March 3, I was able to meet with the Superintendents in Allegheny County concerning the newly updated CDC mask guidelines. While there certainly isn’t a unanimous consensus among School Districts, all agree that we are well on our way to lightened restrictions. Discussion focused solely on masking requirements being optional, but no one is clear about how that impacts other areas of Covid relief. Social distancing, water fountain use, etc., are still unchartered areas that are not yet being discussed or recommended. To that point and with the record low Covid numbers in Allegheny County, I strongly believe we will make a formal recommendation to the Board of Directors that masks become optional soon.

At this time, and no time before a change is made to masking requirements, would we consider changing the other Covid mitigation measures that are in place like social distancing and others. While those will remain in place for some time, I will be recommending that masks become optional starting Monday, March 28, 2022.

It was clear to me today that most schools in the area have either already begun to make masks optional or have announced the change for next week. I believe that waiting a few more weeks will allow us to see if the masking reductions cause any upticks in Covid cases. If they don’t, I feel confident we can make the move on that date.

I am attaching the slides that were provided today from the Allegheny County Health Department and Allegheny Intermediate Unit. I will be back in contact with parents and update everyone prior to Monday, March 28th. This way we will have more data to make the informed decision on whether to proceed.

Dr. Castagna
