County Police Investigate Officer-Involved Critical Incident

City of Pittsburgh, Allegheny County – On Thursday, September 1, 2022 at about 8:58 p.m., officers of the City of Pittsburgh Bureau of Police responded to assist the Robinson Township Police with locating a missing woman in the 1400 block of Rydal Street in Pittsburgh’s Westwood neighborhood. The woman, an adult female resident of Robinson Township, was reported to be missing and endangered by family members at 6:54 p.m. The female’s vehicle was found parked in the 1400 block of Rydal Street. At about 9:28 p.m., after learning that the woman’s vehicle was associated with a home on Rydal Street., officers attempted to make contact at the front door. A 43-year-old male confronted officers with a revolver, and a Pittsburgh Police officer discharged his firearm striking the male. First responders entered the residence to render aid and secure the scene. The revolver was located near the male’s right hand. The male was pronounced dead at the scene. The missing woman was located inside the home. Pittsburgh Police requested the assistance of the County Police Homicide Unit in accordance with their critical incident policy. Detectives responded and initiated an investigation. The investigative facts related to the actions of the involved police officer will be submitted to the District Attorney’s office for review. Identification of the involved officers will be made at the discretion of their respective police departments.
